How to use Dirty Down Rust

Have you wondered how to use Dirty Down Rust to get the best rust effect on your miniature?
Well look no further! We’ve got you covered with an easy tutorial to help you get the most out of your Dirty Down Rust paint.
In this tutorial, we’ve used some railings to showcase the rust effects, but you can use any miniature or piece of terrain that needs weathering.
1. Paint the base of your model
To get started, lightly paint some Darkstar Molten Metal Graphite onto the base of your model, making sure to get it onto all the places you want the rust to show through. Starting your painting this way ensures the steel will be seen through the rust later, and your end effect will look more realistic.
2. Stir the sediment in the pot
Grab your bottle of Dirty Down Rust and use an old paintbrush to stir the pot and get the sediment out from the bottom. Keep stirring until you have a good dollop of sediment on your brush.
You can also shake the bottle to mix all the sediment together, but this way is quicker and less laborious!
3. Paint the sediment onto the model
Paint the sediment onto your model wherever rust would naturally sit, making sure to cover as much of the metallics as possible.
PRO TIP: Rust will appear wherever water settles, so think about where water would naturally gather on your model before applying the rust. For our model, the water would run down the railings, so we made sure to apply the Dirty Down Rust in that direction.
4. Reveal the steel!
Finally it’s time to take away some of the Dirty Down Rust to reveal the steel underneath and to give your model some depth.
You can do this by wetting your finger, making sure to remove any excess water before rubbing your finger along the model lightly. This will remove some of the Dirty Down Rust, and give it a realistic rusted effect.
Alternatively, apply some Darkstar Molten Metal Graphite from earlier with a very light dry brush, making sure to apply it gently over the top of your model. This will also give you that authentic rusted look you want for your model.
