The Warhammer 40,000 Command Edition: A fantastic starting point
- No Comments
Like so many other tabletop wargamers, I started at a reasonably early age. While I bought and painted my first models during 2nd edition 40k, it wasn’t until 3rd edition that I really took an interest in the game beyond the models and painting.
This though, is the first time I’ve properly looked at a starter set aimed at new players. The previous 2 player sets of my youth were a much more intimidating, “here’s a 400 page rulebook to learn” experience.
By comparison this Command edition has been a very different experience, much more structured and manageable. Each of the core mechanics are broken down and walked through, taking the form of easy to understand missions and scenarios. Each mission builds on the one before it, helping to cement the concepts without overwhelming.
The Contents
The Command Edition contains;
+ a fold out playmat in thick card,
+ a number of plastic terrain pieces,
+ a softback mini-rulebook,
+ the Command Manual which combines both building instructions, lore and step-by-step missions to walk you through your first foray into a war torn universe,
+ two referece sheets with the unit profiles for the units included in the box,
+ dice and range rulers,
+ and last but certainly not least, 27 fantastically detailed, push fit models – Nine Primaris Space Marines and Eighteen Necron constructs.
The Models
The models were fantastic to work with. Clever designing has produced models that really don’t need glue, without the stiff and static poses I recall from my childhood.
Likewise the terrain was incredibly easy to put together, resulting in great looking terrain that can be used in a variety of setups.
Once I had them built (and glued, because I’m old-fashioned like that), I gave everything a basecoat with a spraycan (Colour Forge Steelforge Silver for the Necrons and Terrain, Colour Forge Tempest Blue for the Marines).
With that, the set is finished and ready to play!
Final Thoughts
Although not aimed at players like myself who have been involved for some time in 40k, for those just starting or looking for an optimal way to introduce someone new to the hobby this is an absolutely magnificent starting point, and is well worth the price.
I’m certainly looking forward to my next chance to demo this game!
