The Search for Space with the Dropfleet Commander Starter Set
Like a lot of my fellow more mature gamers, I remember the glories of Battlefleet Gothic. Building, painting and drafting a fleet. Launching waves of torpedos against a helpless cruiser. It’s an itch I’ve not been able to scratch for quite some time, and I’ve been looking for a game that might fulfil that need. I had minor dalliances with X-Wing and Firestorm Armada before Spartan unfortunately closed, but nothing clicked. Then however, a prospect was dropped into my lap. The Dropfleet Commander Starter Set.
I’d not really considered Dropfleet before. I’d taken an interest in its older sister game, Dropzone Commander, but hadn’t followed through. Now though, could be just what I’d been looking for. While the focus is more on planetary assault than deep space battles, ship combat is still an integral part.
Contents
The Dropfleet Commander 2 Player starter box contains two starter fleets, the United Colonies of Man and the alien Scourge. Also in the box is a Rulebook, two paper playmats, templates to represent planetary objectives and sheets of tokens. They also include some quick-play guides, dice and a tape measure! The fleets are highly detailed hard plastic and come with enough parts to make 3 Cruisers and 4 Frigates for both the UCM and Scourge fleets. Each ship can be built in a number of different ways to represent different classes.
The Rules
The rules are comprehensive, with interesting mechanics. Unlike most wargames, the weapons in Dropfleet have no ranges, instead the system relies on how easily a ship can be targeted. Actions like firing weapons, raising shields and aggressive movement raise the ships signal profile and make it easier to lock on to, giving a real tactical weight to your decisions. Overextending to take the fight to the enemy all guns blazing may be very cinematic and might allow you to sweep away the opposition in a hail of laserfire, but it could equally light up your fleet like a Christmas tree and give your opponent a clear target.
Final words
If you’re interested in bombarding cities from space or launching waves of dropships to capture strategic points on a planet while masses of ordnance are hurled across the void of space to devastate enemy ships, then perhaps Dropfleet Commander could be the game you’re looking for, and where better than to start with the Dropfleet Commander Starter Set?
